It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . . Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

BOOK REVIEW
OH my! i am really nervous of making a book review for this one... wah! this book was written so beautifully, I'm afraid that I will mess it up by making a crappy review. wah! here goes nothing...
This book is hanging on my bookshelf for over than a year now. And, I decided to read, it. I know when I grabbed this book, I am up for something extraordinary, just seeing the reviews of my friends in goodreads I can say that this is not just an ordinary book... I knew from the start the it will blow me away. But that expectation didn't live up for me at first... The first page talks about death, and I have no idea at first who is narrating the story, at first I thought it would be the book thief herself and then I realized it was the Grim Reaper... and the book is about the lives of the people during the Nazi period, I myself was really clueless in this period but this book provided me enough knowledge on what the Nazi period is like, and throught reading this book sadness is very evident all throughout while I was reading it.
even though this book was reall hugely acclaimed by everyone, there were times that the book got me bored and I was thinking of skip reading it. cause at some parts I don't understand the whole point of the book , but as I read on, I appreciated the whole beauty of the book, The book made me appreciate everything around me and the whole story is like a breathe of fresh air, OH my!! this book was written so beautifuly that I have to devote all of my time reading it and knowing what will happen next, Liesel is such an interesting character, Her, being the book thief is really somethin unusual , at the Nazi period i would have stole for food, but her on the other hand she steals books... I admit that for me the whole book has a pretty simple story line, for me, a girl that reads a LOT of Young Adult Fantasy this one, pretty much, came simple for me... BUT why did I give it 5 stars you say???
Cause due to it's simplicity there is certain jolt into my system, that compelled me to read and read and read the entire book... and I daresay that i don't want the book to end. I just want to read more of Liesel, her life and her struggling ... and that to me is a book that i worth giving a 5 star rating...
Dear Gabby,
ReplyDeleteI'm an award-winning author with a new book of YA fiction. Ugly To
Start With is a series of thirteen interrelated stories about teen life
published by West Virginia University Press in November
of 2011.
Can I interest you in reviewing it?
My book's only 160 pages short. The writing is easy and open, and all
the stories are interconnected--same hero and story arc throughout. It
reads like a brisk novel in the form of stories.
If you write me back at johnmcummings@aol.com, I'll send you a PDF of my book.
At this point, my small publisher is out of available review copies, so
I hope and politely ask that you consider the PDF. I would be
very grateful.
My publisher, I should add, can offer your readers a free excerpt
of my book through a link from your blog to my publisher's website:

Here’s what Jacob Appel, celebrated author of Dyads and The
Vermin Episode, says about my new collection: "In Ugly to Start With,
set in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Cummings tackles the
challenges of boyhood adventure and family conflict in a taut,
crystalline style that captures the triumphs and tribulations of
small-town life. He has a gift for transcending the particular
experiences to his characters to capture the universal truths of human
affection and suffering--emotional truths that the members of his
audience will recognize from their own experiences of childhood and
adolescence.”
My short stories have appeared in more than seventy-five literary
journals, including North American Review, The Kenyon Review, Alaska
Quarterly Review, and The Chattahoochee Review. Twice I have
been nominated for The Pushcart Prize. My short story "The Scratchboard
Project" received an honorable mention in The Best American Short
Stories 2007.
I am also the author of the nationally acclaimed coming-of-age
novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Philomel Books, Penguin Group,
2009),winner of The Paterson Prize for Books for Young Readers (Grades
7-12)and one of ten books recommended by USA TODAY.
